Digital Magazine Printing

Here at the Magazine Printing Company, we use HP Indigo digital presses and professional inkjet presses for digitally printed magazines. These can print in such a way that there is no colour or print quality difference between digital and offset magazines. Whereas in the past the quality of offset printing exceeded digital, now the difference between the two is negligible. The main reason to quote and print your magazines digitally now is if your magazine print quantity does not meet the minimum to benefit from offset economics of scale.

As mentioned above, we're also here to teach students and do not seek to speak over any one's head. (Google "Economics of scale"). It means that once a printing machine is set up, every magazine that comes off the Press costs less than the one before it. The cost of setting up the magazine printing job is less with Digital Magazine Printing and so the cost of the first magazine is less with digital presses. That also means that the starting price is less for smaller quantity print runs.

As a live example: A customer who was printing offset magazines had a reduced subscriber list, and that magazine crossed from being cost-effective with offset printing to more cost-effective with digital magazine printing. The client was hesitant to take the leap from offset to digital. So we produced a digital magazine to match the previous offset magazine issue, and colour-matched the magazine so well that the client could not tell the difference.

OFFSET Magazine PRINTing

Offset printing is the old-world "ink, stamp and transfer" process, but instead of using old wooden blocks or "movable type", the industry now uses aluminum plates. (Google movable type). Using 4 aluminum plates, all standard photo colours can be achieved. (See more about CMYK colours below and Google "Computer to Plate"). The most noticeable modern advantage of Offset Printing is that the price dramatically reduces per magazine unit at higher printing quantities.

At this time in Australia, all papers are to some degree certified, and the idea that any commercial printer could get away with using illegally harvested trees and paper is now laughable. Equally, for all the claims of green papers and methods, are the 100% recycled green papers and methods any better for the environment? At a glace you might say, "Of course, they're better for the environment. You're cutting down less trees." Then consider the following. The nature of Recycled Paper is once use / already printed paper. In order for that paper to be returned to white, it needs to be whitened. Many papers now include a "No Chrorile used" credential. Indeed, for 100% Recycled Stocks to be "white" means they need to be whitened. So the real question is, what is better for the environment? Disposing of a chrorile by-product or growing and harvesting paper trees that would not have grown without human intervention?
